The Tether Equipment TetherPro cable is superior to other tethering cables I’ve used, with a substantial increase in transmission speeds.

1. What is the USB-C TetherPro cable?

In every picture studio, photographers are inevitably tethered to a computer with their cameras. It is typical for photographs to be previewed and evaluated on a large screen as opposed to the camera’s back.

Choose the tethering option from the camera’s menu, install the necessary software on the computer, connect the cable, and you’re ready to go. Simple in nature.
But, despite the fact that the fundamentals are, well, fundamental, it is merely a wire; there is less technology than we give credit for.

To attach your camera at such a distance from the computer, you must first use a cable capable of handling exceptional data transfer requirements. Second, it must be durable and protected since, unlike other static cables, it will be dragged across the studio floor.
The issue is that conventional USB cables do not come in the requisite lengths, and beyond a certain length, data transfer can become unstable and slow.

3. Performance

 

It is amazing how much one cable can affect data transmission speeds, particularly as cable length increases; not all cables are created equal.

As soon as the TetherPro cable is plugged in, it is immediately clear that it is larger and more industrial than a typical USB cable, since its vivid coloring, length, thick diameter, and reinforced connectors are all larger and more robust than those of a standard USB cable. Although designed primarily for data communication, the TetherPro cable can also transmit 60W of electricity if required. This expansion, measuring 4.6m, is substantial and will accommodate most small to medium-sized studios.

After plugging in and loading the camera, it is promptly recognized. In addition, the delay between the camera and LiveView preview is negligible. After a few frames, the speed is nearly instantaneous, indicating that a quick connection has been established between the two devices. Smart Shooter replaced Sony’s Picture Edge Desktop, which I had utilized for several years. There are several major variations, with speed being the most notable.

I’m happy with the Smart Shooter software and cable after a few trial shots and testing. Assessing the transfer speeds, the read speed was 312MB/s and the write speed was 281MB/s. These transfer speeds are comparable to those of the majority of SD cards, therefore it’s remarkable that a cable of this length can support them. Compared to an inexpensive 2m USB Type-C cable, the 4.6m cable provides transfer speeds of 38mb/s read and 26mb/s write, a significant improvement.

In a hectic studio or location shot, transfer speeds are only one aspect to consider. The weight and quality of the cable are also significant. Consider that the cable will be pulled over the studio floor as you film. This means that the exterior of the cable and its connectors must be durable, well-insulated, and shielded. The TetherPro cable does not disappoint in any way; the right angle connector is durable and simple to attach to the camera. Similarly, the computer end is also fortified. I typically use a Tether cable in the studio, the excellent AREA51 one I reviewed last year; the TetherPro is an improvement in terms of construction. Assessing the speed difference between the two cables reveals that the AREA51 cable has a read speed of 249MB/s and a write speed of 248MB/s, making it a very tight battle.

About the cable itself, it is twice as thick as a typical cable. Over the course of several weeks of use, this cable has withstood being dragged over studio and workshop floors, trampled on, slept on by multiple dogs, and generally abused as cables typically are.

I have no complaints regarding the cable’s speed and dependability after doing a comprehensive test.
